LED stadium lighting is a crucial part of every sporting event. Whether it is a football match or an athletics meeting, good lighting gives a better playing experience and more safety for athletes and spectators. In this article we look more closely at the most important aspects of stadium lighting.

Why is LED stadium lighting so important?

Stadium lighting is not only there to light the pitch. Its purpose is a safe, bright and evenly lit environment, so that athletes and spectators alike can experience the match to the full. The light level has to suit the circumstances: the type of sport, the size of the stadium and the time of day.

Colour temperature and experience

Another important aspect of stadium lighting is the colour temperature of the lamps. At sporting events the colours of kit and surroundings have to be rendered accurately, so that athletes can follow the game easily. That is why the lamps need a high colour rendering index (CRI) and the right colour temperature, showing the pitch and the players as naturally as possible.

Light shows

The atmosphere in the stadium counts as well. A light show can really lift it, for example combined with a goal tune or the players walking out. Bright flashes of light in parts of the stadium then make for a spectacular start to the match.

Glare from stadium lighting

Glare is an important point of attention: light can dazzle athletes or spectators and affect their performance. To prevent this, the lamps have to be carefully positioned and aimed so that the light does not shine straight into anyone's eyes.

The area around the stadium has to be protected from the light too, because light pollution can cause considerable nuisance. Because light poles are tall, it is easy to cause unintended light pollution in the surroundings. That is why OVI-Enschede always advises on light pollution beforehand and draws up a well-founded lighting plan.

Saving energy with LED stadium lighting

Energy efficiency matters when choosing stadium lighting as well. Sporting events are energy-intensive, and the lighting can account for a large part of the energy used. Energy-efficient lamps and smart lighting control can cut consumption considerably and lower operating costs.

Several clubs have already made significant energy savings by switching to LED lighting, including RKC Waalwijk, the FBK stadium, PEC Zwolle and Sparta Rotterdam at Het Kasteel.

Safety and light

Finally, the safety of athletes and spectators is a key aspect of stadium lighting. A well-lit stadium helps prevent accidents: when an athlete falls, the medical staff must be able to see it quickly. That is why the light levels and the angles of the luminaires have to be planned carefully.
